Debbie McGregor
Sight Loss Well-Being Mentor*
HELLO,
I'M DEBBIE
I have always been passionate about helping people for as long as I can remember.
In my late teens, I began doing voluntary work with the Down’s Syndrome Association. I then went on to travel to Slovakia to help orphans in an institution.
I have dedicated the past 21 years to working for a sight loss charity, where I have spent the latter 6 years as a Community worker in the Family Well-being Team.
During this time, I have witnessed first hand how little support there is available to help people and their families cope, adapt to change and move forward. There is a great demand to provide more support to people living with a visual impairment. It’s apparent that a lot of people are abandoned and left to struggle alone at every stage of their sight loss. This can feel very daunting when you are losing your sight and identity.
In my spare time I enjoy being with my partner, my son, my cocker spaniel, Sully as well as my family and friends.
I love the simple things in life – walks with the dog, the beach, reading, going for meals, listening to music and treating myself to an occasional relaxing massage.
I have always believed it costs nothing to be kind and compassionate and if you show this to others you will receive it in return. I have realised over the last 10 years the importance of this more than ever before.
Like most people, I too have undergone personal struggles and health challenges in my life.
I understand we can all feel lost at times and require the support and empathy of others to find ourselves again.
I am wholly committed to helping other people, being thankful, staying positive and having purpose in my life.
As a fan of a good quote, I shall end on another one:
“The amount of good things in your life depends on your ability to realise them.”
*I am not medically trained and this is also not Life coaching or
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.
